Also, note that the problem isn't just getting Scratchbox to work, but getting Scratchbox to work in a production environment to develop code using the latest Maemo SDK. The real solution will of course be Scratchbox 2. Maemo SDK+ is based on it and looks promising. For some reason though, even Maemo SDK+ still doesn't support anything but i386 officially. It has never worked for me, and the latest release is from 2005.
